Joy is in short supply today
We believe that there is more joy in Jesus than anywhere else. However many of us are not experiencing more joy because we cling to some too common misconceptions:
Misconception:
To glorify God I must suffer and be miserable all the time
Truth:
God is Glorified when we treasure him Above all else
Misconception:
Trials in my life mean God is upset with me or doesn't love me
Truth:
Trials Are God's way of drawing us to Himself
Misconception:
Our greatest joy in life comes from all the stuff God gives us
Truth:
Our greatest joy in life is knowing God himself
Misconception:
If want joy, I have to do more, be more, and work more for Jesus
Truth:
Joy is found by trusting and treasuring Jesus
Misconception:
We desire joy (pleasure, happiness, delight) too much
Truth:
We are willing to settle for too little
Indeed, if we consider the unblushing promises of reward and the staggering nature of the rewards promised in the Gospels, it would seem that Our Lord finds our desires, not too strong, but too weak.
We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea.
We are far too easily pleased."
